What is Kodi?
Kodi is the most popular media center software in the world. It is 100% legal and open source. Anyone can write a Kodi Add-On or modify the Kodi software to meet their own needs. This makes it a VERY versatile platform for streaming all kinds of digital media. There are add-ons that let you watch live television in the form of IPTV. There are other add-ons, such as Placenta that allow you to stream almost every movie or TV show ever filmed as well as many that are still in theaters.
How does Kodi Work?
Kodi can be installed on most streaming media devices. You can install Kodi on Amazon Fire TV Stick, an Amazon Fire TV, an Android Box, a Windows, Linux, or MAC computer, or one of many other supported devices. There are official add-ons for subscription services such as Hulu, Netflix, HBO, etc. Those add-ons DO require a subscription to watch their content and are often geo-restricted. To bypass geo-restriction, use a VPN. That being said, there are also many unofficial add-ons that allow you watch the tons of subscription-free content that is available on the Internet. We also recommend using a VPN when streaming content using these add-ons as well. Click here to learn why you should ALWAYS use a VPN.
Why should I use Kodi?
Kodi is a full-featured home theater controller. It allows you to not only stream video and view pictures that are located in your home network (on your PC or on a Network Attached Storage device), but also the myriad of digital content that is available on the Internet. Music, movies, TV shows, 3D content, 4K content, adult videos…the list goes on. If you have Kodi installed, and a great build like the No Limits Build (the best build available in our opinion), you can watch literally everything ever made. No Limits Build comes pre-installed with all the best Kodi add-ons. Including our favorite add-on Placenta. Placenta is a fork of a fork of the very famous Exodus add-on.

What is Roku?
Roku is a very popular streaming media device. Unlike most other devices, the software on Roku is completely closed source. Which means that only applications specifically designed for Roku can be installed and used. While there is a lot of content to be watched on the Roku, most of that content is subscription based. And there are no means by which the Roku can be jailbroken because the software is written such a way that it is not modifiable by normal methods. This all means that it is not possible to install Kodi onto your Roku directly.
How does Roku Work?
Roku is a little box that connects to your TV using an HDMI cable. It then connects to your WiFi connection in your home. It essentially turns your TV into a smart TV by allowing you to run applications. The overall setup is super simple.
- Plug the device into your HDMI input on your TV using the included HDMI cable.
- Plug the power into your Roku
- Choose your WiFi connection and enter the credentials
- That’s it! Start watching stuff!
How to Watch Kodi on Roku?
Roku is a great device. It’s well-built and has the best remote ever made. The remote even has a headphone jack so you can watch TV privately. That’s a killer feature! But it doesn’t support Kodi. There is no Kodi app available for Roku. But that doesn’t mean you can’t watch Kodi on Roku. Roku has a built-in screen mirroring feature that is similar to Chromecast. You can basically show what’s on the screen of your PC, tablet or even your cell phone on your TV screen.
So, How Do I Do It?
Screen mirroring is not available on iOS or on Apple devices. Google devices such as the Nexus or Pixel that are running Android v6.0 or higher also do not support screen mirroring. These devices CAN play videos, photos or music on your Roku using the Play On Roku feature that is accessible through the Roku Android App for iOS and Android.
Be sure your Roku is properly set up for screen mirroring
If your Roku device supports screen mirroring and is running Roku OS 7.7 or later, the feature is enabled automatically and there is no action required to enable it. To check the software version of your Roku device, go to Settings > System > About. If an older version is installed, connect your Roku device to the internet and have it manually check for a software update.
Mirror your Windows 10 PC to Your Roku
The easiest and fastest way to watch Kodi on Roku is by using your Windows 10 PC. Once you have installed Kodi on your PC, you are just a few clicks away from sending that video over to your Roku.
- Open the Action Center. Refer to this Microsoft article for help.
- Select Project.
- Select Connect to a wireless display.
- Select your Roku device and following the on-screen instructions.
- Once connected, you will see your PC screen on your TV screen.
- Run Kodi.
- Watch stuff.
If you are unable to “project to a wireless display” on your Windows device, contact Microsoft for further help. But, barring any difficulty with that, you should be all set to watch Kodi on Roku.
Mirror your Android Smartphone or Tablet to Your Roku
There are so many Android device manufacturers out there. They all have their own mix of features, software, and hardware. While we can’t be certain that your Android tablet or smartphone supports screen mirroring, the following rule of thumb usually applies. If your device is running Android version 4.2 or later it likely supports screen mirroring. Odds are your device supports it. Also, different manufacturers use different terminology to describe screen mirroring. Here is a list of common terms that are used.
- Smart View
- Quick Connect
- AllShare Cast
- Wireless display
- Display mirroring
- HTC Connect
When you have determined which term is used on your device, you can enable the feature on that device. Look through your settings menu to find the setting (usually under the display menu). You can also get old-school and read the instructions that came with your device.
