How to Uninstall Apps from Amazon Fire TV Devices

Everyone likes to try out apps on their Amazon Fire TV Stick or other Fire TV device.  But after a while, due to the limited amount of memory on most Amazon devices, you will start running low on RAM.  There are a lot of things you can do to clean up your memory to free up space.  But the most common thing you can do to maximize your memory is to uninstall applications.  I cover some of the other methods of freeing up space in my article No available free space on disk – Popcorn Time on Fire Stick.  For this tutorial, we will be uninstalling an app.

Most of us only use a limited number of our favorite apps on our Fire TV devices.  If you are a Kodi user, you normally only use Kodi.  Kodi likes to have plenty of breathing room, so those users should probably uninstall everything except Kodi.  If you are using Stremio, TeaTV, BeeTV, or any of the other standalone streaming apps, you will only want those apps installed on your device for best performance.  In this article, I will show you how to uninstall an app as well as how to see how much space the app is taking up.

Stop your ISP and your government from spying on your activity.  Use a VPN to protect your privacy.  A VPN is an essential tool when you are using any free or low-cost streaming application or service.  Especially if you are using a jailbroken Fire TV or Fire Stick or Android box.  ALWAYS use a VPN if you want the best streaming experience, the best selection of media and don't want your ISP to slow you down or shut you down.  I recommend IPVanish VPN for all my clients and I use it on all my devices.

There are a few ways to uninstall apps from your Fire TV device.  The first two methods I will show you are quick and dirty methods, while the third method gives you the opportunity to analyze how much space the app takes up on your device to help you decide if you need to uninstall it.

First Method of Uninstalling an App

The first, and easiest method of uninstalling an app from your Fire TV device, is performed right from the home screen of the device.  Hit the home button to be sure you are on the home screen.  Now, scroll down until you are on the line Your Apps & Channels and scroll over to the right until you see the app you want to uninstall.  In this tutorial, I am going to uninstall Kodi as an example.  Here, I have scrolled down to Your Apps & Channels and scrolled over to the right until Kodi is selected.

Then, click the Menu button on your remote as shown in the illustration below.

When you click that button, you will see a little menu pop up in the lower right-hand corner of your screen.  It can be hard to see if you aren’t looking for it.  Scroll down in that menu and click on Uninstall.

Once you click Uninstall, wait for a minute or so, and the icon for the application you uninstalled will disappear from the system.  As you can see below, Kodi is gone from my Your Apps & Channels strip.

Second Method of Uninstalling an App

This method starts from any screen you happen to be on.  You don’t have to be at the home screen to do an uninstall.  Long-press the HOME button on your remote.

Keep the Home button pressed until the following screen comes up.

Then click on Apps to go to the main apps screen and then, using the remote, scroll up, down and over until the app you want to uninstall is highlighted.  Kodi is highlighted in the example below.

Click the Menu button on your remote as shown in the illustration below.

As you can see below, Kodi is gone from my Your Apps & Channels main screen.

Third Method of Uninstalling an App

This method is a little more advanced than the other two ways.  This method allows you to see in more detail how much space the application is taking up.  This can be handy if you are trying to decide which apps to keep and which ones are taking up a lot of space.  This method is accessed by first accessing the Settings menu on your Fire TV device.

From the home screen, scroll over to the right until you are on the Settings screen.  Then scroll down one and over and click on Applications

From this screen, you can see how much Internal Space your Amazon device has.  Scroll down and click on Manage Installed Applications.

You will now see a list of all the applications that are installed on your device.  As you scroll down the list, you can see on the right the amount of memory each of the apps consumes on your system.  Scroll down and click on the app that you want to uninstall.  In this case, I will be uninstalling Kodi.

You can do several things to the app from this screen. As I show you in my article How To Reset Kodi On Fire TV Devices, you can also manipulate the amount of memory used by the app without uninstalling it.  But here we are going to uninstall Kodi.  Click on Uninstall

You will be asked to confirm that you want to uninstall.  Click Uninstall

Now you will see that Kodi has disappeared from my apps list.

Those are the three ways you can uninstall an app from your Amazon Fire TV device.
