Before I start the tutorial, I want to explain a little bit about Roku for those of you that aren’t familiar with these devices.
What is Roku?
Roku is one of the most popular streaming set-top boxes available. Roku has been around for a long time and was one of the first players in the streaming TV game. Roku quickly connects to the HDMI port on your TV and then connects to your WiFi connection. The Amazon Fire TV family of devices is the most similar devices and most of you reading this will be familiar with the Fire TV Stick.
Latest Roku Streaming Devices
If you are still using your old Roku Device from back in the day, then consider upgrading to the latest Roku now from Amazon.
A huge advantage of using Roku is that it can also be used on iOS and Android devices. This means that when you are away from home, you can still log in with your Roku account using the iOS or Android app and continue watching your shows on the go. You can easily create an account on Roku by visiting their site https://www.roku.com.
Even with all the content that you can get on Roku, you still won’t be able to watch third-party or other copyrighted content without some maneuvering. This is where Kodi can turn your Roku into a super supercharged device. Once you get Kodi running on your Roku, you will be able to watch virtually any content you want. Not to mention that Kodi has tons of available add-ons so you can watch free movies and TV shows on Roku.
How to Jailbreak Roku
When we talk about jailbreaking, we are generally talking about violating the terms and conditions of the device manufacturer. All of the major streaming device manufacturers restrict how their devices can be used and jailbreaking is always a no-no on their list. When you jailbreak your device, you will void your device’s warranty and could possibly cause your device to malfunction if you install apps that are not from trusted sources.
Why should I jailbreak my Roku?
Roku devices do not allow us to install third-party add-ons or apps to give us movies, live sports, PPV events, etc. So we have to jailbreak Roku to enable us to install these apps and add-ons.
How do I jailbreak my Roku device?
The short answer is that you can’t. Not technically. Roku has a very tight grip on their ecosystem and, while this ensures a smooth experience for its customers, it does limit what we can do with this device as far a jailbreaking. In this tutorial, we won’t be actually jailbreaking the Roku device, but we will be exploiting a feature of the device to allow us to use Kodi on it. This is technically equivalent to jailbreaking the device as it will allow you to use the Roku to watch all the content and be able to install all sorts of third-party add-ons. For those of you that are not familiar with Kod, let me do a quick rundown on this unbelievable application.
