How to Install Kodi on Roku Devices

Most Kodi users are aware that there is a version of Kodi for every popular operating system. Whether you are running Windows, Linux, Android or MacOS, you can install Kodi.  This is why Kodi is so popular on devices like the Amazon Fire TV, Google’s ChromeCast and other generic Android boxes.  But what if you use Roku?  Roku is a very popular device and there is a good chance you have one if you are a seasoned cord-cutter.  Well, you can also use Kodi on Roku.  It’s really a lot simpler than you would think.  This tutorial will show you how to do it.  This tutorial is applicable for ALL Roku Streaming Sticks including versions 1, 2, 3, 4 and the Roku Express.

Before I start the tutorial, I want to explain a little bit about Roku for those of you that aren’t familiar with these devices.

What is Roku?

Roku is one of the most popular streaming set-top boxes available.  Roku has been around for a long time and was one of the first players in the streaming TV game.  Roku quickly connects to the HDMI port on your TV and then connects to your WiFi connection.  The Amazon Fire TV family of devices is the most similar devices and most of you reading this will be familiar with the Fire TV Stick.

Latest Roku Streaming Devices

If you are still using your old Roku Device from back in the day, then consider upgrading to the latest Roku now from Amazon.

Roku turns your TV into an entertainment powerhouse.  In addition to serving up many of your normal cable TV channels, Roku can stream Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Google Play Music, Pandora, YouTube and more.  Roku advertises that you can get more than 4500 channels on their device.  That is the most channels of any other device as far as I can tell.

A huge advantage of using Roku is that it can also be used on iOS and Android devices.  This means that when you are away from home, you can still log in with your Roku account using the iOS or Android app and continue watching your shows on the go.  You can easily create an account on Roku by visiting their site

Even with all the content that you can get on Roku, you still won’t be able to watch third-party or other copyrighted content without some maneuvering.  This is where Kodi can turn your Roku into a super supercharged device.  Once you get Kodi running on your Roku, you will be able to watch virtually any content you want.  Not to mention that Kodi has tons of available add-ons so you can watch free movies and TV shows on Roku.

How to Jailbreak Roku

When we talk about jailbreaking, we are generally talking about violating the terms and conditions of the device manufacturer.  All of the major streaming device manufacturers restrict how their devices can be used and jailbreaking is always a no-no on their list.  When you jailbreak your device, you will void your device’s warranty and could possibly cause your device to malfunction if you install apps that are not from trusted sources.

Why should I jailbreak my Roku?

Roku devices do not allow us to install third-party add-ons or apps to give us movies, live sports, PPV events, etc.  So we have to jailbreak Roku to enable us to install these apps and add-ons.

How do I jailbreak my Roku device?

The short answer is that you can’t.  Not technically.  Roku has a very tight grip on their ecosystem and, while this ensures a smooth experience for its customers, it does limit what we can do with this device as far a jailbreaking.  In this tutorial, we won’t be actually jailbreaking the Roku device, but we will be exploiting a feature of the device to allow us to use Kodi on it.  This is technically equivalent to jailbreaking the device as it will allow you to use the Roku to watch all the content and be able to install all sorts of third-party add-ons.  For those of you that are not familiar with Kod, let me do a quick rundown on this unbelievable application.

What is Kodi?

Kodi is an application that was originally created as a media center application to be run on the XBox.  Over the years it has gained popularity as well as an enormous developer community.  This means that developers can create add-ons for Kodi and you can download and install them to extend the functionality of Kodi.

Kodi is available as an application for all major operating systems like Linux, Windows, Android, MacOS and iOS as well as being available for many of the most popular gaming consoles.  There are so many Roku users in the world, that it becomes more important than ever to be able to use Kodi on Roku.  And, since Roku has locked down their system so tightly, you can use Kodi on Roku without even violating Roku’s terms of service or voiding your warranty.  Let me show you how.

The main feature of Kodi that we are looking to leverage is that there are add-ons.  Specifically, there are add-ons that have been created by the Kodi community that allow you to watch virtually ANY movie or TV series ever made.  These movies and shows are on-demand and in HD.  Not to mention the plethora of live TV add-ons and add-ons for porn or anime or whatever it is you want to watch.

How to Install Kodi on Roku

OK, so now down to the nitty-gritty.  Be sure to understand that this solution requires you to have a device with Kodi installed and configured with the add-ons you want to use on your Roku.  This device can be any device that runs Kodi, which means most any computer, tablet or other mobile devices that are compatible with Kodi.

Your Roku device does not officially support the streaming of the content we are unlocking in this tutorial.  If you are streaming coprighted material or pirated content, then that is illegal in most countries.  Your ISP can report you to the copyright holders in some cases.  Also, there is some content that can’t be accessed in some countries due to governmental restrictions.  Using a VPN will protect you from both of these issues. More importantly no one will be able to snoop on your streaming activity, so you will be safe from any legal issues that could arise.  I recommend using IPVanish VPN Service and they have offered an amazing discount for my readers.
