Best VPN Services for Streaming Kodi, Terrarium TV, Popcorn Time and More
There are lots of options to choose from these days when it comes to streaming media on your jailbroken Amazon Fire TV or Fire Stick. Most people are familiar with Kodi, and when they think of free movies and tv series, they usually mention Kodi with add-ons such as Exodus, Placenta, Covenant or Neptune Rising. But there are some great alternatives that some people overlook. Most of these applications are easier to install and offer great content. I talk about some of this in our Ultimate Fire Stick Streaming Setup for 2018, but I will still touch on a little of each of these programs here as well. This article is mostly about the best VPN service to use, but there will be a lot of information about each program in the list.
Terrarium TV and Popcorn Time vs Kodi
Software like Terrarium TV and Popcorn Time have been around for a long time just like Kodi, but don’t seem to be as well known. A simple Google search for anything about streaming media always yields a lot of results for Kodi add-ons. A big reason for this is because jailbreaking Kodi can be complicated, despite the claims of it being the easy way to go. While this is true if you are using Kodi as a Media Center controller as it was intended. Out of the box, it does that very well. But to get the free content that we all want, there is a fair amount of configuration and installation of often times obscure add-ons that are hard to find. It can be frustrating to install as well as a headache to maintain. I believe that is why there is just more content for Kodi out there. It’s because Kodi requires a lot of tutorials. Here is one that shows you How to Jailbreak Amazon Fire Stick and Fire TV Stick 2018. Have fun with it. But consider these alternatives and learn about the best VPN service for each one.
Terrarium TV needs no instructions for installation. It installs as an APK file that anyone can easily sideload using a phone app. (I recommend Apps2Fire for Android. If you don’t know about it, you can see it in action in my tutorial How to Install MX Player on Amazon Fire TV with Apps2Fire.) Terrarium TV runs right out of the box with no configuration. It works perfectly with the Fire TV remote control without any modification or Virtual Mouse Pointer installation. The Virtual Mouse Pointer is not bad, considering. And if you just have to run something that needs it, it ‘s a great solution. Many Android Apps run nicely on Fire TV devices except for needing a mouse. But it’s a solution I like to avoid when possible. And the latest Terrarium TV integrates very well with the Fire TV device.
IPVanish is the best VPN service to use with Terrarium TV. In my own real-world testing, IPVanish provides the best stream speeds when using Terrarium TV. This also holds true for Kodi, since Kodi with add-ons uses similar technology. IPVanish allows up to 10 simultaneously connected devices for just a few dollars a month. With the discount I have worked out for our KodiAmerica.com readers, you get a 57% discount, too. CLICK HERE to take advantage of this exclusive IPVanish deal. And thank you for supporting my site.
Popcorn Time has been around forever as well. Popcorn Time uses BitTorrent technology instead of the usual Web scraped providers. BitTorrent, also called P2P, serves the media up from the Internet from sometimes hundreds of other BitTorrent users simultaneously rather than from one website or server. This results in streams that are very stable. In the traditional client/server model, if the server slows down or crashes, the stream suffers. You are relying on a single connection to a single file that has to stay smooth. We all know that doesn’t always work out well. With the P2P model, you are streaming little bits of the file from each of hundreds of other P2P users. A slowdown or crash of one of the hundreds of users barely affects the overall speed. While the providers scraped from the Web are very good and usually, very reliable, most digital media is leaked out onto Torrent sites before it is available anywhere else. So, the content will often be newer content. Higher quality HD content will almost always be available with Popcorn Time than with Terrarium TV due to the huge files that can be hosted using this method. I am watching Black Panther at this very moment while writing this article. The quality is unbelievably better than with Terrarium TV. But the file size was something like 2.5GB. It would be difficult to get a nice smooth stream from a website. P2P makes it possible to run your Internet connection at max speed. WARNING: BitTorrent and P2P streaming of copyright content is ILLEGAL in many countries. Enforcement varies, but if you use P2P applications such as Popcorn Time, you are running a very real risk of some serious fines or possibly jail time. They are serious about this folks. So am I. Protect yourself with a VPN.
The best VPN to use with Popcorn Time is NordVPN. BitTorrent performance was the best overall with NordVPN. I was able to consistently connect to more peers and get more overall bandwidth using NordVPN. You can connect up to 6 simultaneous devices. The price is already insanely low for NordVPN, but if you use my link, you can get an even better price. And thanks for supporting my site. CLICK HERE to sign up for NordVPN.
Netflix, HuluPlus, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, and others.
Then there are the regular paid streaming services. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Movies, etc. Don’t count them out as players in the streaming media game. While I mostly talk about how we can get free content, there is still a valid reason to continue paying. I live in Medellin, Colombia. I speak Spanish more or less but prefer my programming in English. I’m more of a Terrarium TV user, but often times I have friends over and they want to watch a movie. Not a subtitled movie, but a movie in Spanish. That’s where my Netflix subscription comes in. Netflix has an awesome selection of Spanish language content. The content is restricted, but there is a huge subset of Netflix content as well as all the Spanish content that is georestricted to South America. Netflix Originals are huge here. Because we get to see them when the rest of the word does. Unlike a lot of content. Sometimes the movies are not the newest, but there is more selection than any other easy-to-use method of getting content.
One of the most restricted services here in Colombia is Amazon Prime Movies. It is VERY rare to find any content that is available here. Most all of Amazon’s content is geo-restricted. So, in order to watch most of that content, you must use a VPN. You know we always recommend using a VPN when using ANY streaming service, but in this case, you don’t have a choice. If you want to watch it you have to use one. Should make you realize why you ALWAYS need one. They know where you are. They know what you are watching.
I’m only going to talk about those two services because the experiences are typical of using any of the other available services. Proper use of the right VPN solves the issue quickly and easily, however.
The best VPN for streaming paid TV services is StrongVPN. In my first-hand experience, StrongVPN has been 100% successful in overcoming the geo-restrictions imposed by all of the paid services including Netflix and Amazon. This comparison has been performed over many many installs of each of my recommended VPN services here in Colombia. You can connect up to 5 simultaneous devices. StrongVPN is a very economical VPN service with lots of features. Please use my link to sign up if you want to get the best price. And thank you for supporting my site. I hope this article sheds a little light on the sometimes confusing world of streaming media. And, don’t forget, VPNs are an integral part of the whole streaming media experience. It is our only defense against those that want to stop us from watching what we want, when we want. For more information, read these articles.
