How to Install Media Centre Updated – Kodi V18.0 Leia RC1 for Fire TV Devices

I have written a few articles in the past that show the progress being made in the development of Kodi V18.0. Kodi V17.6 is currently the latest release version available.  Millions of people are using Kodi on their jailbroken Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and many other devices.  You have always been able to download and install the development versions as well, but often these are not fully functional releases. So far development has progressed from ALPHA to BETA and now they have finally reached what is known as a “release candidate” phase or RC.  This is a version with all of the details hammered out as to what will be in the final release version, but with a little more work to be done to solidify many of the features so that they actually work. The Kodi version that is currently available for download is RC3. For your convenience, here are the links to my other Kodi V18.0 articles so you can catch up if you need a little refresher.

If you just don’t have much experience with Kodi at all, I wrote a little article about Kodi that gives you a nice overview of the capabilities and functionality of Kodi in general.

How to Use Kodi – In-Depth Overview

If you read the articles above, you should have a solid working knowledge of Kodi up to V18.0 Leia ALPHA.  And you should also be familiar with another great Kodi fork called Media Center.  One of the problems with using the Kodi ALPHA, BETA or even the RC versions, is that they aren’t ready for primetime.  They are for development only at this point. The team over at takes a current development version of Kodi is and sort of ties up all the loose ends so that it functions correctly.  This allows you to have a fully functional Kodi development build you can play with, but it will function as close to a release version as possible.  The latest Kodi version is Kodi V18.0 RC3, but since Wonderbox lags just behind the latest version, its version is WBMC V18.0 RC1.  But apparently there is an RC2 out there as you will see later.  This article will cover the installation of Media Centre V18.0 RC1.

Your IP is: Your Connection

Stop your ISP and your government from spying on your activity.  Use a VPN to protect your privacy.  A VPN is an essential tool when you are using any free or low-cost streaming application or service.  Especially if you are using a jailbroken Fire TV or Fire Stick or Android box.  ALWAYS use a VPN if you want the best streaming experience, the best selection of media and don't want your ISP to slow you down or shut you down.  I recommend IPVanish VPN for all my clients and I use it on all my devices.

Now let’s get on with the installation of Media Centre.  As with all my articles, all the files you need to get set up are available in the Jailbreak App Vault.  If you don’t have the App Vault installed, you can get it installed quickly and easily using my article How to Install the Jailbreak App Vault.  Once you get that installed, move on to the next step.

Installing Media Centre V18 RC1

Click on the icon for the Jailbreak App Vault.  It will be in your apps and the icon looks like this.

If you have already been using the Jailbreak App Vault, then my code will already be entered into the code field.  Check to be sure it is correct, and if it isn’t, then enter the code 47356537

Once you are sure the code is correct, press CONTINUE to enter the Jailbreak App Vault.

You will see Media Centre v18.0 RC1 on the list. Click on the download icon and will begin downloading.

You can see the download progress.

When the download has completed, the download icon changes to an install icon.  Click on the install icon to begin installing Media Centre

You will be shown the list of permissions that Media Centre requires.  Scroll down until you see the option to install and click Install Media Centre will begin installing

When Media Centre is finished installing, select Done and click on it.

You will be back at the Jailbreak App Vault apps list screen again.  Press the back button on your Fire TV remote to exit out of the app list screen.  You will be asked if you want to leave.  Click Yes

Now, back at the Jailbreak App Vault code screen, use your Fire TV remote to move up to the top of the screen and click on the little trash can icon up at the top right.

You will be asked if you want to empty the trash.  Click Yes

Then click the back button again to completely exit the Jailbreak App Vault.  Press the home button on your remote to go back to the home screen of your Amazon Fire TV device.  Then long-press the home button again like you did before and choose apps.  Let’s go back to the apps screen and look for Media Centre.  It will most likely be at the bottom of the list because you installed it last.

Let’s move it up to the top.  While the Media Centre icon is selected, long press the SELECT button on your remote.  It’s the big button in the center. You will see a message come up on the screen that tells you to press SELECT again to drop the icon where you want it.

Move the icon up to the top and then press SELECT to drop it there.

Now, if you go back to the Home screen on your Amazon Fire TV device, you will see Media Centre in the front of the list under YOUR APPS & CHANNELS

Go ahead and click on it to open up Media Centre.  The first time you run it you will see a progress bar along the bottom of the splash screen.  This is an initialization process and you won’t see that again.

Subsequent times you run Media Centre, you will see a normal splash screen like this.

After a brief pause, you will be taken to the Media Centre home screen.  Oddly enough, even though the latest official version of WBMC that is available is V18.0 RC1, a message popped up saying I should upgrade to RC2.  I could never find an RC2 to update to, so I just clicked OK.

Now you will see the familiar Kodi/WBMC home screen using the default Estuary Skin.

At this point, there aren’t many major differences between the Beta versions and this Release Candidate.  Overall Kodi and therefore development is moving along nicely but with most of the changes being under the hood.  The overall functionality of Kodi V18 vs V17.6 is the same.  There are a few menu items that have been moved around to make the flow a little better.  And there are certainly a lot of stability and speed improvements that have been made.  So, if you want to experiment with the latest, cutting-edge version of Kodi with the stability of a nearly production-ready product, you should seriously consider Media Centre.

And, as always, make sure you have your VPN fired up and running when you are testing and/or using Kodi, or any other streaming media application.  You should already be using your VPN for everything else Internet-related, so go ahead and get it set up on your Fire TV Device for the ultimate protection.  With IPVanish, you can connect up to 10 devices.  And, right now, I have been able to leverage an awesome 57% discount on IPVanish VPN service for my readers.
